George Kennedy
was elected Santa Clara County District Attorney
in 1990, and reelected in 1994, 1998, and 2002. George retired as District Attorney in January 2008.
During his 33 years with the District Attorney's Office, Kennedy has held most positions in it. From 1974-1982 he specialized in major felony jury trials, handling many rape and murder prosecutions including six death penalty cases. Before his election, he was Chief Assistant and supervised the Felony Trial Division.
He is a graduate of the University of Southern California School of Law. His undergraduate degree is in Government from Claremont McKenna College. He also attended the National College of District Attorneys and the F.B.I. National Law Academy. He is past president of the California District Attorneys Association, a former director of the National District Attorneys Association, and past chairperson of the Santa Clara County Domestic Violence Council. He was a California Peace Officer Standards and Training Commissioner from 1993 to 1996. He is currently a gubernatorial appointee to the California Council on Criminal Justice and was selected by California's Chief Justice to help make recommendations regarding the implementation of Proposition 36.
The Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office has 452 employees, including 190 attorneys and 96 investigators. The Santa Clara County Laboratory of Criminalistics also reports to the District Attorney.
