Rabbi Allen I. Freehling has served as the Executive Director of the Human Relations Commission of the City of Los Angeles since 2004. Previously, he was the Senior Rabbi of University Synagogue for 30 years and is now the congregation's first Rabbi Emeritus for Life.
He is a highly respected community activist and has held a large number of leadership and board positions including President of the Board of Rabbis of Southern California, President of the Pacific Region of the American Jewish Congress, Founding Chair of the Los Angeles County Commission on AIDS, Founding Chair of the International Association of Physicians in AIDS Care, Founding Chair of the Community for Education Foundation, Founding Facilitator of the Muslim-Jewish Dialogue, etc.
Rabbi Freehling is considered to be an expert in inter-faith issues, creating collaborative partnerships within both the public and private sectors, and focusing on economic, psychological and societal factors in human interaction.
He holds an undergraduate degree from the University of Miami, both a bachelor's and master's degree from Hebrew Union College, and doctorates from Kensington University and Hebrew Union College. |
